Rendo Park

2009 - 2013

In Ende, Soekarno spent four years in exile thinking about his people and his thoughts on Indonesia. The Rendo park was where Indonesia’s first president would visit and gather his thought, while overlooking the sea. The design reestablishes the park as a contemplating space, designed in a lush, green park with a pond. Right above the pond, Soekarno can be seen sitting still, sculpted by Hanafi. The sitting statue tries to recreate a strong yet subtle image, of a strong leader meditating in silence. The communal nature of the landscape is a nod to the president’s humility and closeness to his people, subtly showing his strong character and the timelessness of his presence.
